[HIP-HOP FUNK] Is there a better time to see Oakland’s the Coup than in early November of an election year? The voice of rapper and funk extremist Boots Riley sounds so fitting against the scrunching sound of fat politicians squeezing their butts into new seats of authority. Riley has always had a way of putting a street-laced spin on witty political humor, and the Coup’s newest album, Sorry to Bother You, is a perfect soundtrack for the post-election-week blues—whether it’s due to Riley’s hard-hitting lyrics or the band’s funk-punk sound, which is political unrest in audio form. Now with a live band, the Coup’s live shows feel even more like a dance-infused version of a 1970s demonstration, but with no hippie laissez-faire dancing, only fist pumps and mosh pits.
