[URBAN TWANG] Denver is Portland’s answer to country music. The members of the boot-wearing, hairy-faced six piece fit the city’s vibe of urban scruffiness, but their music lands smack in the middle of open-range country territory. Making heavy use of twangy vocal harmonies and melodies echoed by pedal steel, mandolin and harmonica, Denver plays toe-tapping tunes focused on such topics as love and booze, with just enough of the cheesy intrigue that makes the genre so relatable. The band’s live show, featuring much soloing and rotating vocalists, feels best set in a honky-tonk or by the light of a fire, but when it comes to a country band in the city, the plush Doug Fir Lounge will have to suffice.
