[JAZZ NOIR] The Bay Area-based flugelhorn player spells his name differently from the far-more renowned guitarist, but Dmitri Matheny shares Pat Metheny’s knack for connecting with non-jazz audiences and aficionados alike. Like his mentor, the late, great Art Farmer, Matheny’s warm tone and tuneful approach avoids smooth-jazz treacle. He’s joined by a quartet of top Portland jazzers, including pianist Randy Porter and drummer Alan Jones, in the latest installment of his long-running program of noir-ish originals and themes from crime flicks, spy movies and even a suite with voice-over narration, in the best hard-boiled Chandler and Hammett tradition.
