Brigitte Dortmund

With their bubblegum palette, thick impasto, and pod-like organic shapes, Brigitte Dortmund’s paintings are stylistically unmistakable. In her newest body of work, she begins to edge away from the vegetal world, her surfaces increasingly expressing saturated hues and extravagant surfaces without recourse to representational subject matter. As such, they occupy a visual space seemingly at the intersection of abstract expressionism and color-field painting. It’s a fresh and agreeable development that exploits Dortmund’s strongest gifts as an artist. Through January 11.
