[AMERICANA] Local product Anna Tivel subtly beguiles with her particular brand of Americana. Her tunes don’t get too lively and neither do her dusty vocals, which often sound like they are somewhere between being half-sung and half-whispered. Filled with picturesque images, the lyrics in her songs gaze upon the American landscape like a languid, observant pair of all-seeing eyes, simultaneously taking in all of life’s beauty and ugliness. Despite the calm mood Tivel seeks to create with her music, she could still stand to inject her vocals with a little more excitement and variety just to spice things up a bit, but this is a minor quibble. If Americana is your bag, then Anna and the Underbelly is worth checking out.
