Hubbard Street Dance Chicago
7:30 pm Wednesday, Feb. 13., Wednesday February 13 | $26–$64.
One
of the country’s better contemporary dance companies, Hubbard Street Dance
Chicago returns to Portland three years after its last visit, bringing along a
program of exclusively Israeli
choreography. A warm reception is likely: Local dancegoers should recognize not
only some of the company’s nearly two-dozen dancers but the dance makers as
well, particularly Ohad Naharin, whose Batsheva Dance Company has also appeared
locally. Naharin, who has a gift for spellbinding movement, wove together two
of his company’s existing pieces—Three
and Max—into a new piece called Three to the Max, developed specifically
for Hubbard Street and built from a dance language of Naharin’s own devising,
called “Gaga.” Sharon Eyal, a
former Batsheva choreographer, also contributes work, called Too Beaucoup; it’s set to a
soundtrack spanning Gang of Four to Leonard Cohen to Art Blakey and the
Jazz Messengers.
