[POST-PUNK POTPOURRI] The search-engine-confounding name. The hometown in the cultural hinterland. The notoriously unclassifiable music. Tampa, Fla., four-piece Merchandise is a very hard sell indeed. And yet, after building a cult following from its roots in Cigar City’s tiny punk scene for the last five years, the band appears to have achieved some unlikely success. At South by Southwest earlier this month, it played gigs sponsored by such tastemakers as Pitchfork, Vice and Thrasher, and it’ll release a hotly anticipated LP, Totale Night, in April. Though Merchandise trades mainly in post-punk, the band has a rep for idiom iconoclasm. At tonight’s Holocene-presented all-ages show, expect a genre-defying mix of punk, pop and classic indie styles.
