[KID POP] At Aaron’s party—that is, in the video for “Aaron’s Party,” child pop star Aaron Carter’s 2000 hit single—preteens threw ’bows at a time when everyone else had chaperones measuring inter-groinal distance at a two-foot minimum. Suspiciously older gentlemen arrived with an unofficial flyer announcing the party as an “open house,” someone spilled juice on a pillow, his parents came home and grounded him, but you know what? The party didn’t stop. All this before Carter’s 13th birthday. This author’s thinly veiled jealousy, though, has turned to schadenfreude. Carter has gone eight years without touring and 11 without releasing a new album. During his hiatus, he secretly dated Lindsay Lohan while still dating Hilary Duff, was arrested for marijuana possession and found himself in numerous legal battles. It’s hard to see through the heavy PR smog, but it seems this year’s After Party Tour (get it?) will be conflicted. There’s no doubt Carter can sing and dance, but the originality of the performance and its suitability to the homey Mission Theater remains to be seen.
