Northwest New Music, City of Tomorrow

BRETT CAMPBELL
7:30 pm Saturday, March 23., Saturday March 23 | $25.
Community Music Center
3350 SE Francis St.

The city’s newest new-music ensemble is filling a gap our other estimable contemporary classical groups just don’t have room to thoroughly explore: European mid-century modern music. This March Music Moderne concert focuses on music by influential 20th-century Italian composers Luciano Berio (who taught at California’s Mills College) and Franco Donatoni, plus three of the latter’s students: New York Philharmonic composer-in-residence Magnus Lindberg and his fellow Finn former Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen (both numbered among the world’s top active composers today) and English composer Robert Keeley. Guest artists the City of Tomorrow woodwind quintet join Third Angle pianist Susan Smith, spellbinding singer Catherine Olson, violinist Tylor Neist and NWNM founders Florian Conzetti on percussion and cellist Diane Chaplin in solo works, duos, trios and quintets, including Berio’s tribute to the just-murdered Martin Luther King, Salonen’s ferocious Yta III (musically depicting a moth incinerated in a flame) and Donatoni’s wild woodwind excursions.
