Ghostface Killah, Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn

MATTHEW SINGER
9 pm., Wednesday April 10 | $30.
Mississippi Studios

[WU-TANG VINTAGE] Any hip-hop aficionado worth his knowledge of the coke trade is familiar with Ghostface Killah, arguably the Wu-Tang Clan’s preeminent lyricist. Less-known is Adrian Younge. A young producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, Younge composed the soundtrack to the hilarious 2009 blaxploitation send-up Black Dynamite. Although the film was a goof—a great one at that—the music was an expertly crafted exercise in ’70s-style funky soul. Clearly, the dude knew his shit, and he went on to prove that further by producing a dynamically retro record from William Hart of Philly soul giants the Delfonics and his own warmly faux-vintage psychedelic throwback Something About April, under the name Venice Dawn. Now Younge is collaborating with Ghostface on the rapper’s upcoming 12 Reasons to Die. What’s more, Younge and his band are backing Ghostface live. Considering Wu-Tang’s signature love of dusty, classic soul samples, it’s a match that should make any hip-hop head salivate.
