[WOLF GANG] When Los Angeles rap collective Odd Future first jumped on the scene two years ago, it gained popularity by mixing shock value and artistic integrity. The group’s leader, Tyler the Creator, gained the most buzz thanks to the “Yonkers” video, which depicted him black-pupiled and throwing up cockroaches. Despite all the noise, Tyler and the crew were largely inconsistent. That’s starting to change, as the group’s resident R&B crooner, Frank Ocean, released a classic in last year’s Channel Orange, young talent Earl Sweatshirt is putting out his best material yet, and Tyler just dropped Wolf, a fascinating concept album that shows the rapper-producer stepping back from the shock raps and dwelling more on introspective storytelling. He’s still a wily eyed jokester who jumps headfirst into concert crowds, but now he—along with the rest of his crew—is giving his work a refined touch.
