The Holmes Brothers
3939 N Mississippi Ave.
[A STUDY IN SOUL] The gospel is afoot, and the funk-soul-blues alongside. Following a nasty battle with cancer, Wendell Holmes is back sharing the stage with brother Sherman and "Brother" Popsy Dixon, as the legendary vocal trio launches another tour in support of their 11th album, Feed My Soul. Helmed once again by Joan Osborne, who shepherded the 2001 release that more or less introduced the Holmes Brothers to the mainstream, this latest collection emphasizes Wendell's original compositions—though the group, beloved for genre-confounding covers of everything from classic country to Cheap Trick, recasts the Beatles' "I'll Be Back" as earthy doo-wop—and minimizes production gloss to capture an unvarnished portrait of their spellbinding performances. Eliminate all other factors, and the one that remains must be the truth.
