The Telescopes, LSD and the Search for God, Night Beats

[PSYCH] The Telescopes should be offended when it’s suggested that the Velvet Underground existed in a vacuum free of musical influences, the band’s bloodline diluted among millions of respectful but stylistically dissimilar groups. Lead singer Stephen Lawrie’s deadpan vocals simmer with energy almost as strongly as Lou Reed’s, even if the guitars drone more like My Bloody Valentine. Perhaps, like all VU comparisons, this is just wishful equating, but the Telescopes sure do sound like other cult-friendly bands—Suicide and Spacemen 3 both come to mind—without the cult following. Since their debut, 1989’s Taste, their style has varied along with their lineup (Lawrie is the only original member), and for 10 years the band seemingly disappeared. If that’s not enough to make the Telescopes the next candidate for cultish rediscovery, I don’t know what is.
