[SOLO SWEETNESS] Who isn’t hesitant when a frontman decides to ditch the band and step out on his own accord? Ben Ottewell, co-founder and frontman of English indie-rock band Gomez, took the solo plunge in 2011, releasing a melancholy collection of acoustic tracks teetering between sparse intimacy and dense design, weighed down by nostalgic emotionality showing Ottewell’s increasing maturity as a songwriter. His gravelly Ray Montagne-Nick Drake concoction of a voice drifts over the gauzy, muted guitar work and strings, flaunting a tender approach to the songs more than five years in the making. Ottewell’s Shapes and Shadows might not have the Gomez punch, but his ambition for low-key familiarity is not far off.
