[RETRO-FUTURE FUNK] It’s a shame what’s happened to funk in recent years. Like reggae, the word—if not precisely the form—has largely been co-opted by college hippies who wouldn’t know a good groove if it leapt out of their bag of dried kale and whomped them in the mouth. Thank Bootsy for Damon “Dam-Funk” Riddick. A So-Cal native, the thirtysomething producer has been fighting to keep true, heavy-thwacking funk and its synth-driven offshoot known as boogie alive since the late ’80s. Although he toiled in obscurity for well over a decade, 2009’s massive double-disc set, Toeachizown, introduced Funk—and, by proxy, funk—to a generation who never heard the music outside the context of hip-hop. Ridder has teased retiring from live performance recently, so consider this an opportunity to catch the man, in all his keytar-brandishing glory, before it’s too late.
