Laurel Bustamante: Lost Gardens

RICHARD SPEER
Saturday April 27
Augen DeSoto
716 NW Davis St.

Diminutive, inventive, and just plain darling, Laurel Bustamante’s acrylic-and-gouache paintings on paper lift the viewer into a skyscape of floating islands and multicolored skies. Trees are growing on the islands, and often they reach toward one another with anthropomorphic branches. The Ashland-based artist’s Lost Gardens series looks like the Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, as it might be rendered in a children’s book. Somehow Bustamante manages to pull this off in a way that charms, rather than cloys. Through April 27.
