Circa

AARON SPENCER
7:30 pm Wednesday-Sunday, April 10-13., Friday April 12 | $22-$64.
Newmark Theatre
1111 SW Broadway

Not quite the big top and not quite Cirque du Soleil, Australian company Circa combines contemporary dance with circus acrobatics. Seven tight-bodied performers balance on one another, sail through the air and tumble across stage, courtesy of White Bird. Traditional circus elements are present: a fanciful hula-hoop routine and a contortionist who appears to dislocate his ribcage, but Circa is more high-brow than a big-top show. It’s more austere, too, to be sure, but the dancers are known to reach out into the crowd with emotion and humor to make the experience more intimate.
