[STRAIGHT OUTTA LAUREL CANYON] I’m an absolute sucker for a good vocal harmony, and Dawes’ three-part vocal prowess is no exception. The Los Angeles-based quartet has been channeling the Laurel Canyon vibe—think Jackson Browne or Buffalo Springfield—since its 2009 debut, The North Hills, yet with modern draw. The band’s vintage sound—gleaming guitar, fine-drawn keys, steady rhythm section—exudes ’70s California rock to such a degree that the Google reference on the band’s most recent release, Stories Don’t End, might have you second-guessing your ears. Still, the album is the band’s most polished to date, ebbing with psychedelic guitar and plucky call-and-response, and rooted in frontman Taylor Goldsmith’s distinctive gift for making the mundane sound meaningful. Tonight, Dawes shares a co-headlining bill with similarly backward-gazing rock’n’rollers Dr. Dog.
