[EVOLVED TRIP-HOP] After his early EPs acquired stamps of approval from a handful of tastemaking British beat junkies ever eager for new sounds, James Blake proceeded to stun them all with his 2011 self-titled full-length. Blake’s impressionistic electro-funk, spliced with suburban soul and a dash of Aphex Twin weirdness, was also in dire need of antidepressants—an aesthetic that made Blake a perfect collaborator for Bon Iver later that year. It was his production that cut deep on the first album—Blake’s beats stagger and lurch, with submarine pings and oozing synths drifting more freely atop the percussive elements—but his bleak, minimal vocals only twisted the knife. On this year’s follow-up, Overgrown, Blake expands his sonic palette with a few brighter sounds (and a weird guest appearance from RZA), but his gorgeous and understated vocals still sound like half-finished song ideas recorded into a cell phone during a lonely 2 am walk home from the pub.
