However oblique the overriding concept or abstract the punch lines, Going Places, the sophomore collaboration of Shelley McClendon and Michael Fetters, was always going to make people laugh. The stage vets comprising the Aces (both appeared in recent live productions of The Lost Boys and Road House) are old hands at the funny business, and nothing sells theatrical minimalism like broad comic timing. Over a series of loosely etched vignettes that often seem as drawn from modern dance as traditional sketch comedy, the duo engages their human-and-otherwise characters with an all-in physicality that takes full advantage of the performers’ appeal while edging the seemingly unconnected scenes ever closer to an underlying vision. Imaginations run wild, but they’re far more than jokers.
