[POST-CLASSICAL] It’s no longer rare to see one person up on a stage manning a synth, a drum machine and a looping pedal. Classically trained violinist Emily Wells puts those things to different use, though, creating her own brand of post-classical, hip-hop-based music. Blending a theatrical, orchestral flair with hip-hop beats and touches of electronic sounds, Wells combines influences ranging from the Notorious B.I.G. and Wu-Tang Clan to Bob Dylan. What this normally creates during her live performances is a kind of spaceship setup that produces beats, layers and loops of sounds from violin, guitar, synth and keys. With strong string sections as well as simultaneously haunting and alluring vocals, Wells’ songs build into an atmospheric and entrancing one-woman show.
