Barbara Sternberger: Confluence

RICHARD SPEER
Friday July 12
Elizabeth Leach Gallery
417 NW 9th Ave.

In lieu of a brush, Barbara Sternberger paints with snow cones loaded with oil paint, raw pigment and wax. Despite this gimmicky, newfangled technique, the paintings have a decidedly old-fashioned charm. In works such as Moving and Beginnings, she lets color, form and surface come to the fore, weaving narratives of pure opticality in the vein of Abstract Expressionist Joan Mitchell. Through July 27.
