Joseph Lanker

RICHARD SPEER
Wednesday August 21
Backspace
115 NW 5th Ave.

Skeletons and skeletal figures with downcast heads populate Joseph Lanker’s cringe-worthy paintings, which wouldn’t be out of place in a goth teenager’s bedroom. Chalky surfaces, metallic paint, and lots of moody drips are his pictorial tricks of choice. He paints on distressed panels and old doors with the hinges still attached, a strategy that, coupled with the subject matter, lends the work a self-important morosity that is grating, sophomoric and trite. Through Aug. 30.
