The Northstar Session

BRANDON WIDDER
7 pm., Tuesday September 10 | Free.

[SWEET THINGS] I’m a sucker for a good vocal harmony, and while the Northstar Session may lean heavily on twee commercial pop and Ryan Adams niceties, its taut, polished harmonies are worthy of greater things. The Los Angeles trio’s latest release, the live set Echoes From the Canyon, is a perfect example of the band’s rustic palette and late-’60s influences. “I tried to bury you long ago, but every time you come up like a rose,” sings Matt Szlachetka to background “oohs” and swelling crescendos. The drifting countermelodies, the countrified lost-love ballads, the male camaraderie—it’s all too damn sweet.
