[POLYPHONIC JAZZ] The Bay Area-based clarinet master Ben Goldberg first gained national attention in the 1980s by combining traditional klezmer melodies with daring improvisation in the pioneering New Klezmer Trio. He’s since collaborated with contemporary jazz greats Joshua Redman, drummer Scott Amendola, pianist Myra Melford, guitar groover Charlie Hunter and trumpeter Ron Miles. This quintet includes the ever-adventurous Wilco guitar wizard Nels Cline, highly regarded tenor saxophonists Ellery Eskelin and Rob Sudduth and drummer Ches Smith, who plays with Xiu Xiu and many others. Goldberg usually contributes subterranean basslines on the rare, colossal contra alto clarinet. While capable of ingeniously intertwining Ornette Coleman-style polyphonic lines, the ensemble focuses lately more on plaintive, song-like melodies.
