[ONE-MAN NOIR] A few fun ways of describing the sound of Alex Zhang Hungtai, aka Dirty Beaches: Suicide scoring Blue Velvet; Chris Isaak if he grew up in downtown New York’s art scene in the 1970s; Roy Orbison with a drum machine and an Ambien cocktail. I could go on. Suffice to say, the Taiwanese-born, Canadian-raised sonic architect makes darkly evocative music, shrouded in lo-fi mystery and infused with the danger of a ’50s biker flick. Latest album Drifters/Love Is the Devil has two sides—one featuring eerie, analog-electro pop songs, the other ambient instrumentals that unfurl like fog through the darkness on the edge of town. It all plays out like a stroll through David Lynch’s subconscious, and it’s as simultaneously unsettling and irresistible as that sounds.
