The National, Frightened Rabbit

BRANDON WIDDER

[TROUBLED BARITONE] Finding comfort in one’s own insecurities is easier said than done, but it often doesn’t take a band five albums to do so. Brooklyn-via-Cincinatti quintet the National has been working toward it for more than 14 years, leaving behind a buzzing wake of anguished, morose “indie rock” in the process. The band’s most recent release, Trouble Will Find Me, is not so much a new venture as an acceptance speech. Frontman Matt Berninger’s abraded baritone still treads in dark subject matter, his voice framed by balmy rhythms and expansive reverb, but where he used to sound like a depressive wino, he now does so with greater melodies and a rich moan of self-assurance.
