[LUSH R&B] For someone who thus far only has a bunch of remixes under his belt, Cyril Hahn’s name is pretty damn high on every bill he plays. Bootleg remixes—the kind in which you have neither the original artist’s consent nor the multitrack masters—are pretty difficult to pull off. That’s just what Hahn’s done, though, starting with Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” and eventually revamping Jeremih, Solange and Mariah. His style takes high-production R&B, wraps it in opaque gauze and turns up the attack on the drums. It must be the music of Portland’s dreams: Hahn’s first original single, due out Oct. 7, features Shy Girls’ Dan Vidmar. With Ryan Hemsworth, a more time-tested remix master, sharing the bill, some may believe Hahn’s just manipulated the hype machine in his favor. Sometimes, though, the hype is right.
