[THRASH ATTACK] I can’t say I’ve ever been a fan of Overkill, but the band supposedly still puts on a good live show. Its 16th album, 2012’s The Electric Age, reminds me of Anvil covering Anthrax. Founding vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and original bassist D.D. Verni have been keeping it true since 1980, but good taste was apparently never on the menu. Kreator, on the other hand, despite also retaining only original vocalist and drummer, has mastered its own Teutonic thrash formula. If anything, the band’s 21st-century output, including 2012’s Phantom Antichrist, has been a return to form after the group’s ’90s flirtations with hardcore. Kreator is a real-deal German institution and never disappoints onstage.
