Denver, the Moondoggies, the Maldives

[COUNTRY] Recorded on a four-track tape recorder in singer-guitarist Tom Bevitori’s house, Denver’s self-titled first release is a twangy, roving slice of country-western music that brings to mind epic mustaches, dusty cowboy boots and shots of whiskey. The six-piece group, featuring members of both Blitzen Trapper and Alela Diane’s Wild Divine, writes songs heavy on floating, bare slide-guitar and crisp three-part harmonies. Aided by simple drum shuffles, harmonica, plucky banjo solos and call-and-response vocals, Denver might not be living in the time when rugged country rock was born, but they’re sure going to play like it.
