[PRE-ROCK] Before alt-country, even before new country, Robert \"Big Sandy\" Williams and a rotating cast of Fly-Rite Boys were spreading the gospel of midcentury modern Americana. To be sure, the blueprint feels less Harry Smith Project than Brian Setzer Orchestra—reverse engineer zero-hour Sun Sessions-y rock ’n’ roll back to component parts; record an album of originals within each slightly disused idiom (Western swing, mariachi, blues, bluegrass); pray fresh context enlivens deadened tunes—but at least there was once a professionalism utterly lacking in latest release What a Dream It\'s Been. Celebrating the Orange County troupe\'s silver anniversary, Williams collected tracks seemingly at random from across Big Sandy\'s 13 previous LPs for acoustic renditions rendered in a motley assemblage of styles just as inexplicable, though the opener\'s newfound reggae tint perhaps suggests cause. This many rivers to cross, don\'t switch horses midstream.
