[BURGEONING SOUL] 2013 was a big year for local soul songstress Jeni Wren: She lent vocals to Shy Girls, which was voted Willamette Week’s Best New Band; she released her debut solo LP, North Star; and she had a weekly residency at the Secret Society for months. This year has brought on a period of grounding and renewal for the Iowa-bred artist, as she begins work on new material that mixes up her classic, sultry lounge vocals with a more modern sound, looking toward James Blake and Elle Verner for inspiration. But with this show, she’ll be in her tried-and-true element, alongside Brownish Black, a local homage to Southern soul.
