[COKE ROCK] Recent press photos of Trans Am say everything you need to know about the D.C. trio: The members’ coordinating white-on-white getups and comically large mirrored sunglasses look the way cocaine feels. The group’s robotic mashup of funk and Krautrock could loosely be categorized as post-rock, but not in the modern pejorative sense. This is what sexy androids were fucking to in the ’90s before Tortoise and Stereolab had the instrumental guitar-rock flag snatched out of their hands by crescendo-mongers from Texas. As retro and schlocky as 2010’s Thing may sound, a quick scan of their AOL-era output merits Trans Am some props for using vocoders well before anyone but German exchange students thought they were cool. Processing an entire Trans Am record can lead to epileptic dance sessions followed by a jarring comedown, but hey, at least this shit is pure. The opening night of the metal and heavy-psych festival Stumpfest finds Trans Am guitarist Phil Manley pulling double-duty with Life Coach, an analog of his day job that trades the undulating synth kitsch for classic rock buildups and the hesher swagger of Thin Lizzy.
