An Evening with Box Set Duo
3939 N Mississippi Ave.
[FOLK-ROCK] Jim Brunberg arrived from San Francisco in the early ’00s and spent the past decade building Mississippi Studios into one of Portland's essential performance and recording venues. He's also been indispensable to such ventures as LiveWire! Radio and Storm Large's acclaimed Crazy Enough, has played in several local bands, and is an ingratiating solo performer. But before he left SF, Brunberg spent several years in nationally-acclaimed folk-jam act Box Set, in collaboration with Jeff Pehrson. Pehrson, meanwhile, has spent recent years singing in a little band called Furthur—the group fronted by the still-shambling members of the Grateful Dead. An Al's Den residency in summer 2012 reminded Portlanders of the good-humored charm and spot-on harmonies the two generate in tandem. Tonight's return show finds them prepping for dates supporting another Bay Area rock vet, Huey Lewis.
