[LONDON SYNTH-POP] Titling your album after a novel that grapples with the lack of confidence in the post-WWII West doesn’t set the most welcoming atmosphere. But The Age of Fracture, Cymbals' sophomore LP, is less about geo-political dilemmas than internal strife. Frontman Jack Cleverly speaks more than he sings, delivering Frenchified vocals over multi-layered synths and crawling grooves in the New Order vein. “I don’t know enough about you/ To be kind to you,” he admits on the disco-leaning “The Natural World.” Drum machines and syncopated choruses lay the foundation for his sardonic observations, but the melancholic beats rarely transform them into something greater.
