Religious Girls, Asss, Soul Ipsum

[EXPERIMENTAL] Oakland has problems. The city’s residents equate “pop” with anything catchy, which, let’s face it, is misleading: Intentionally dull music is just avant-garde. Religious Girls is a band who get the “pop” label, but there’s no Brian Wilson in this wailing three-piece’s fuzzy, manic sound. Karlheinz Stockhausen liked to experiment with tempo as much as these guys, and look what it got him: a gravestone. What’s more, the band includes neither the devout nor the female, so you’d do well to just avoid this Californian acid test of lies.
