Pickin' on Sundays: Balto, Clawfoot, Slumber
830 E Burnside St.
[FOLK] Balto is a band that doesn’t sound of this time or place. Formed in 2010, the local quintet crafts songs conjuring journeys down long and winding roads or epic hikes through expansive mountain ranges. Busy with layers of mandolin, dual electric and acoustic guitar, organ and sweetly intertwining harmonies, the group knows how to make its songs wander. “Smokestacks," the first track off its most recent EP, 2012’s Monuments, begins simply, with rapid mandolin strums and Daniel Sheron’s smooth, slightly twangy vocals, then quickly evolves into horns over a beautiful crescendo of even more fast mandolin, guitar and cymbals. These dynamic layers stack subtly, creating a sound that is at once intricate and familiar: perfect for roaming adventures.
