Hamilton Leithauser, Avid Dancer
830 E Burnside St.
[JUMP INTO THE FIRE] After his beloved band the Walkmen decided to go on “indefinite hiatus” last year, singer Hamilton Leithauser did what any rational frontman would—he called up a few famous friends and made a Harry Nilsson record. OK, that might be overstating things a bit. But on nearly half of his debut solo record, Black Hours, Leithauser is in full-on crooner mode, singing over sparse piano chords and distant movie-soundtrack strings on “5 AM” and marimbas on the bouncy “11 O’Clock Friday Night.” Aided by producer Richard Swift, along with members of Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, and Dirty Projectors, Black Hours feels looser than the Walkmen’s buttoned-up indie rock. It’s not always the best fit, but at least he’s not afraid to try on some new clothes.
