Genders, New Madrid, the Ghost Ease
830 E Burnside St.
[GUITAR-DRIVEN POP] One of the fun things about listening to Genders is that it’s sort of like watching the weather change, mixed with Explosions in the Sky, ’90s pop and your high-school surfy rock band that never quite made it out of mom’s garage. Steady, circular and layered guitar leads most of its debut full-length, Get Lost, sometimes as much a response to the call of Maggie Morris’ warm, floating vocals as it is the driving force behind most of the songs. Able to shift from distortion-heavy melancholy to sweeping, uplifting crescendos in no time, the four-piece skillfully spans a range of emotions, somehow managing to add rays of sunshine to its intentionally stormy rainclouds.
