Rita Robillard: Renewing Time, Caressing the Moment

RICHARD SPEER
Wednesday August 13
Augen DeSoto
716 NW Davis St.

Rita Robillard grew up in Manhattan, so to her, Portland is a Mayberry-caliber small town. She sees our trend toward urban farming, with all its attendant gardens and chickens, as a wider movement toward recapturing an Arcadian ideal. This idea was driven home to her when she was in Rome recently to study the Borghese Gardens. Those gardens are in the museum complex where Italian Baroque sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini’s masterpiece, Apollo and Daphne, is on permanent display. Significantly, that sculpture depicts a woman turning into a laurel tree—the ultimate return to nature. Robillard’s pastiche-centric artworks, which integrate painting and printmaking, don’t take the conceit as far as Bernini did, but they do communicate our collective yearning to return, literally, to our roots. Through Aug.30.
