[BLACKENED DOOM] Oakland’s Dispirit is a conundrum. Led (or misled) by John Gossard, the group’s reputation is firmly linked to his seminal contributions to West Coast metal. His earlier acts, Weakling and Asunder, were legendary movers in the black- and doom-metal underground. Dispirit successfully mixes both vibes, but the band remains so conflicted about how to move forward without incensing its musically moral underground fan base that it has remained a demo band for over five years. One week, Dispirit is playing a festival put on by a car company, the next it’s shredding a contract from a label it deems "too hip." Hopefully this tour is a step in the right direction, and that there’s momentum gaining toward a proper album. The world will be better for it, because all we really want is more music from Gossard’s bleak genius.
