[GRITTY BLUES] The six guys in the Stone Foxes have never had a knack for subtlety. Nine years and three albums into their career, the San Francisco outfit continues to churn out straightforward blues rock, anchored by guitarist Spence Koehler’s primordial howl and lyrics that are rarely ever more than what they seem. Small Fires, the group’s latest release, continues in that tradition, offering an onslaught of aggressive riffage and shouted choruses that fit all too well in the blues-rock paradigm. Cuts like lead single “Everyone Knows”—a song chronicling a twisted murder in the vain of “The Tell-Tale Heart”—shine with blistering harmonica and a Dan Auerbach-esque timbre. Unfortunately, it’s tough to shake the comparison throughout the rest of the record.
