[NW COUNTRY ROCK] The Maldives gained a lot of attention in the Northwest for their 2009 LP, Listen to the Thunder, an album rooted in a backroads country sound. Between the record’s swinging guitars, prominent pedal steel and frontman Jason Dodson’s twangy vocals, the group was inarguably a country band that happened to dwell in the urban bustle of Seattle. On Oct. 16, the seven-piece will release a new full-length, Muscle for the Wing, which tones down the single-genre scope and introduces a side of the Maldives that culminates their influences within an outfit continuously strengthening and growing into itself. The album rocks with dueling electric guitars, arrests with sweeping ballads and engulfs with full harmonies—all while maintaining the band’s most crucial elements, Dodson’s intoxicating songwriting and incomparable heart.
