DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE: [LATIN FOLK POP] This show celebrates the completion of a West Coast jaunt for Y La Bamba, on which the sextet continued to spread the welcome word about Court the Storm, an LP of a quality easily greater than most to come out of Portland during the past year. Though raving about frontwoman Luz Elena Mendoza’s lyrical abilities is old hat by this point, it’s also worth noting just how much Y La Bamba has grown into its own as a band over the past few years. The sextet still has moments when the Latin folk or twee sides of its personality overpower its better inclinations, but Court the Storm, for the most part, finds the group affecting a balance between the two sides of its wonderfully split personality.
