DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:[ADULT CONTEMPORARIES] For all the names dropped through “Walking in Memphis,” Marc Cohn’s 1991 ballad didn’t become the irritatingly ubiquitous karaoke standard you’ve surely heard twice this week because adherents were equally dotty about rock’n’roll history. But the singer-songwriter seems bent upon exploiting his soulful warble and melodic knack to (arguably) honor his forbears. It’s an odd calling, one better served by the cabaret soft-rock covers of his latest release, Listening Booth: 1970, than last original single, “Listening to Levon.” It’s also somewhat telling that, though he reserves tribute for the men in his record collection, only Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Nicks have taken him along their nostalgia tours.
