</p>[AVANT-SOMETHING] It’s apparently pronounced “double u, double v, double w, zee,” but that’s just silly. (Just try to hear “oov-waz” in your head as you’re reading, as that is how I am writing it.) The Lincoln, Neb., quartet describes itself as “avant-blues,” but that’s also kind of silly. More accurately, UUVVWWZ trades in an eccentric form of art rock. Think a loosey-goosey Television fronted by a slightly unhinged Karen O—cerebral riffing, the variously sweetly crooning and manically wailing vocal stylings of frontwoman Teal Gardner, and the kind of time signatures that made you give up drum lessons in the ninth grade. Following on from the band’s more stylistically meandering 2009 self-titled debut, it has tightened things up a little on newest disc, <i>The Trusted Language</i>. Musically, it traverses some spectrum between punk and jazz, though across it all, Gardner is still pretty mental. It’s not always easy listening, but it sounds like it would be quite the spectacle performed live.<p class="p1"></p><p></p>
