Meat Cheese Bread

1406 SE Stark St., 234-1700, meatcheesebread.com. Breakfast, lunch and early dinner daily.

This punk-soundtracked Buckman sandwich shop offers pretty much what its name describes in its four cold and five hot sandwiches, augmented by a breakfast-sandwich menu, puffy chocolate-chip cookies and posh sodas. But the simplicity is deceptive. The meat on these $9-to-$10 'wiches might be Nueske's bacon, and the cheese a Gjetost spread straight outta Norway, while the bread is airy Fleur De Lis. The turkey sandwich is hearty with havarti and bacon, but the real steal is the pulled pork, where a ciabatta roll caked in flour serves as a vehicle for a hash of papaya slaw, jalapeños and stringy, moist meat. Tip: Take it to go, eat half and save the rest for later.
