"First and foremost, it should be fun," Tom Fahey says of bike riding.
And Fahey, who sells and fits bikes at one of Portland's premier shops, the Bike Gallery, should know.
Fun?
Consider rising fuel costs (three bucks a gallon for summertime gas, anyone?) and health and environmental concerns, and it might seem like riding bikes is about a lot more than just fun. In these political times, the act of riding a bike could be a key element to improving our city's economic well-being. Plus, there's the added bonus of how biking improves our health.
But the several thousand spoke-folk who daily ride the 252-plus miles of our city's dedicated bike lanes already know they are saving gas, improving their health and contributing to a better environment. They know, too, just how much fun they're having--and they invite the rest of us to join in.
That's why for the second year WW is publishing a special section, I LIKE BIKE, dedicated to exploring our city's obsession with bicycles. Think of it as your sneak peek inside a culture you've being itching to hitch a ride with.
On the following pages, you'll read interviews with fellow bike geeks and find out why P-town is full of bike freaks. On the safety side, you'll read about exactly why you must always wear a helmet (no matter how uncool it looks) and just what goes on during a bike cop's patrol. And for bike lovers--novice or pro--we offer a list of cool new gear, as well as a handy-dandy pullout calendar packed with fun events for summertime.
Right about now is the time to dust off that old two-wheeler and get out there. Because, after all, riding a bike should be fun.
Keep on pedaling,
Byron Beck
