Free Whiskey and Four Other Art Shows We’re Excited To See This Week

Seeing a work in progress can not only help you better understand the resulting work, but also experience a crucial part of it. Several artists who have First Thursday and Friday openings this week are allowing you to do just that.

First Thursday Picks From Album Covers To Park Sculptures

If you’ve seen the cover of Solange’s True, you’ve seen Mickalene Thomas’ work. And if you’ve seen the cover of either of Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah albums, you’ve seen Emek’s work. Lee Kelly’s outdoor sculptures can be found throughout the city. If you were around for First Thursday a few months ago, you could have gone to see sculptor James Florschutz working in his studio.

The Five Portland Art Gallery Shows We’re Most Excited To See in January 2017

I expect these five shows to help steel us for the upcoming inauguration. Some will do so by reminding us of the beauty that is everywhere for the taking, while others will reassure us that in the face of so much violence, jingoism and hate, we all care about the uncertain future of our humanity.

High Traffic

If a renegade sewing machine on a Tetris kick took over your grandmother’s favorite floral rug, it might look something like Mark R. Smith’s largest work on display at Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
