Oregon's Newest Adventure Sport: Whitewater Rafting While High

Outfitter combines two of the state's passions: weed and wild water.

A new rafting outfitter in Medford has an answer for those underwhelmed by traditional river rafting.

The outfitter, Weed Country Adventures, first registered with the state in February. And now, according to a report from Medford's KTVL (Channel 10), the company is now taking parties down the Rogue River to alternately smoke weed and brave the river's Class IV (difficult) rapids.

On the Weed Country Adventures website, owners Mike and Tawni Boutin make a case for themselves. "These two foodies used to own a BBQ stand! Mike used to be a Chef in Tahoe and throws down some excellent river chow," the website says.

Boutin also starred in a six-episode 2013 reality show on the Discovery Channel called "Weed Country."

From his bio on the show's website: "He's an evangelical Christian who loves country, dogs, guns and weed and cultivates the finest in the region. The poachers agree and several times each summer, Mike has to shoot off guns and run dogs to keep thieves away. He has a fatalistic approach to life and expects to either go to jail or grow old providing the best cannabis to sick people. Nothing in between."

Now, Boutin told KTVL his company's goal is to make sure clients enjoy a stress-free—and legal—day on one of Oregon's legendary rivers.

"We're going to work completely within the law," Boutin told KTVL. "We're not trying to be anarchists. We're not trying to offend anybody. We're not trying to be bad neighbors. We're not going to be going down the river blazing marijuana."

Because rivers belong to the public, and Oregon law prohibits the smoking of marijuana in public, Boutin says that he will help clients go ashore to private property where they can smoke legally.

Also by law, no clients or rafting guides under the influence will be able to help paddle the raft.

The Boutins know how to stay out of trouble, according to their website, which says they "have 39 years of experience using cannabis responsibly and trouble free. Vacation without probation."
